Growing
This hardy perennial thrives in acidic soil and is particularly well-suited for shady spots or areas with partial sun, as it is susceptible to leaf scorch if left in too much direct light. You can establish a lush carpet by planting nursery stock, using divisions, or starting seeds. Once established, it acts as an excellent evergreen ground cover that fills in at a moderate pace, making it a great choice for suppressing weeds, controlling erosion on slopes, or filling the gaps between pavers. It also performs beautifully under the canopy of trees where other plants might struggle.
Because this plant grows with leaves emerging from a single base, it creates a dense, low-profile mound. While it is a wonderful alternative to a traditional lawn, avoid placing it in high-traffic areas, as the foliage damages easily under heavy foot traffic. If you are growing it in containers, ensure the medium provides good drainage, as the roots do not tolerate waterlogged conditions. To maintain a tidy appearance, you can divide the plants periodically to expand your garden or manage overcrowding.
