Growing
Establishing American lotus begins with anchoring its roots firmly in heavy mud. Because this is an emergent aquatic plant, it thrives in environments that mimic natural lakes, swamps, or floodplains where the soil remains saturated. If you are growing this in a container, ensure it is deep enough to accommodate the spreading rhizomes and that the container is placed in a spot receiving plenty of light. While the plant can be started indoors or from seed, you can also propagate it by dividing established plants. If you choose to use seeds, you must first scarify the pointed tip of each seed with a file before soaking them in water to encourage germination.
As the season warms, you will see single upright stems emerge from the water's surface. The large, round leaves and beautiful yellow flowers rise above the waterline on long stalks. This species is excellent for supporting local biodiversity, as its blooms actively attract pollinators to your water garden. Because the plant spreads via runners and rhizomes, it will gradually expand its footprint across the water or through your planting area. During the warmer months, the plant will continue to rebloom, providing a lasting display of color.
