Angelita Daisy
Tetraneuris acaulis
Zones 4–9
Growing
This charming annual is best grown in lean, gritty soils that lack heavy organic matter, as this helps the plant maintain its compact, low-matting habit. Because it thrives in dry conditions and handles salt well, it is an excellent choice for rock gardens or as a drought-tolerant alternative to grass in sunny, well-drained spots. When sowing, you can plant it directly where you want it to establish, such as in the crevices between pavers or on a dry slope to help control erosion.
As a ground cover, this species is slow to fill in and should not be placed in areas subject to foot traffic, as the delicate foliage can be damaged easily. Once established, it works well to suppress weeds in sunny locations. To encourage the most prolific blooming, avoid over-fertilizing or using rich compost, which can cause the plant to become leggy. While it spreads by dropping its own seeds, you can expect a carpet of bright yellow flowers to appear as the season progresses.
