Growing
Often called summer snapdragons, Angelonia produces striking upright spikes of flowers in shades of white, blue, purple, or pink. Because these plants thrive in the heat of the warm season, they are excellent for adding vertical interest to containers or garden beds. When starting these from seed or transplanting nursery stock, ensure your planting site provides plenty of light, as they perform best in full or partial sun.
To keep your blooms prolific, practice regular deadheading by removing spent flower spikes. This simple maintenance encourages the plant to rebloom throughout the season. While they are lovely for attracting pollinators to your landscape, keep a close eye on the moisture levels in your soil. These plants prefer to stay evenly moist, but you must ensure the area drains well. If your garden is prone to standing water, using raised beds can help prevent the root rot that often occurs when soil remains too saturated.
As the season progresses, you may notice the plant spreading naturally by dropping its own seeds. If you are growing them in containers, they remain easy to manage, but always monitor the health of the foliage and stems to ensure the plant stays vigorous.
