Growing
Establishing a black chokeberry shrub is a long-term investment in your landscape, as these woody perennials thrive in a wide range of light, from full sun to deep shade. When you are ready to expand your patch, taking cuttings during the summer is the most effective way to clone the plant and encourage rooting. If you are planting new nursery stock or divisions, ensure your soil remains slightly acidic, ideally staying within a pH range of 4.5 to 7.0, to support healthy development.
Because these shrubs are remarkably hardy and can tolerate even hard freezes and wet, heavy soils, they are excellent for damp areas of the garden. While the berries are highly nutritious, they possess a naturally astringent, mouth-drying quality when eaten raw. To enjoy them at their best, use them in recipes where you can balance that tartness with added sugar.
When the fruit is fully ripe, harvest it immediately for use, as the berries will not continue to ripen once they are off the branch. To maintain their quality, store your harvest unwashed in the fridge, or preserve them through freezing, drying, or canning. Be mindful that birds often find these berries delicious, so you may need to protect the ripening fruit if you want a full harvest for yourself.
