Barley
Hordeum vulgare
Zones 1–8
Growing
When preparing the garden for barley, create a clean, weed-free seedbed. Barley has deep, fibrous roots and pulls residual nutrients from the soil, though you may need to add nitrogen if a soil test shows a deficiency. In an arid region, irrigate thoroughly once immediately after sowing to help the crop establish.
Watch the plants for insect pests. Some aphid populations can be tolerated, but armyworms are more destructive because they can consume entire leaves. Wireworms attack seedlings, so if pressure is high, treat seeds before planting. In humid environments, fungal issues like powdery mildew or rusts can become serious, so choose a variety with known resistance to local pathogens.
Once the grain is ready, harvest it to use immediately, as the crop does not ripen once picked. For long-term use, dry the grain and store it in a cool, dark place. Excess straw placed in mesh bags in water gardens is a traditional method for managing algal growth.
