Beach Strawberry
Fragaria chiloensis
Zones 7–13
Growing
These hardy perennials thrive as low-growing mats, making them excellent candidates for container gardening or as a living groundcover. When establishing your plants, aim for well-draining soil with a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. While they are remarkably resilient and can survive a hard freeze, they perform best when provided with regular watering to keep the root zone moist but never waterlogged.
Because a single plant is capable of setting fruit on its own, you do not need to worry about complex pollination setups; in fact, the flowers are excellent for attracting pollinators to your garden. As the berries develop, keep an eye on their color to determine ripeness. Once you harvest them, eat them immediately or store them unwashed in the fridge to maintain quality, as these berries will not continue to ripen once they are off the vine. If you have an abundance, you can also freeze the fruit for later use.
