Beaked Hazelnut

Corylus cornuta

Zones 2–9

Growing

As a deciduous shrub, the beaked hazelnut is hardy and suits a dense hedgerow or a riparian habitat for local wildlife. The variety you choose affects its look. The eastern variety has a longer, tubular beak formed by leafy bracts that can extend to twice the length of the nut. The shrub grows in everything from full sun to deep shade, so it fits established woodland edges.

This is a woody perennial, so plant it as a nursery-grown shrub rather than sowing seeds. Once established, the flexible, straight sprouts can be used for garden crafts, such as weaving small baskets or supports. If you are growing it for the harvest, watch the nuts. They do not ripen once removed from the plant, so harvest them when fully mature on the branch. Squirrels, chipmunks, and birds are drawn to the nuts.
