Growing

If you start from seed, broadcast it directly into the garden site during late winter or early spring. For more control, sow seeds indoors under a light layer of soil, with the medium moist and firm before you begin. Once seedlings emerge, watch them during extended dry spells so they survive the transition. If you plant established nursery stock, choose cultivars adapted to your local climate and resistant to regional pests.

Focus on air circulation. The foliage grows thick, so space plants adequately to prevent powdery mildew, the most common disease for this species. Consistent soil moisture also reduces the risk of these fungal outbreaks. Deer may nibble on the plants, but they show moderate resistance to the damage.

After the hardest killing frost of the year, mow or trim the area to remove dead plant material and prevent encroaching weeds. If you harvest the leaves for use, wash them before storing. Drying the herb preserves it for long-term use.
