Blueberry
Vaccinium corymbosum
Zones 2–8
Growing
Achieving success with highbush blueberries depends almost entirely on your ability to manage soil acidity. These woody shrubs require highly acidic conditions, specifically a pH between 4.5 and 5.5, to thrive and absorb nutrients effectively. If your garden soil is too alkaline, you may need to incorporate elemental sulfur or peat moss during planting to bring the levels down. Because they cannot tolerate waterlogged roots, ensure your planting site or container has excellent drainage while still providing regular, consistent moisture.
When your shrubs are established, you can enjoy a heavy crop even with a single plant, as they are capable of setting fruit on their own. As the season progresses, look for berries that have reached a uniform, deep blue color. It is vital to harvest them when they are fully ripe on the bush, as blueberries will not continue to ripen once they are picked. To maintain quality, keep your harvested berries unwashed until you are ready to eat them. For long-term use, you can freeze the berries or preserve them in cans.
