Growing
Finding the right site is the most critical step when planting a butternut tree. While these trees thrive on stream banks and terraces, they prefer well-drained soils and can handle rocky, limestone-based ground much better than their black walnut cousins. Avoid planting in heavy, compacted, or overly dry earth, as the tree needs consistent moisture to establish. Be mindful of nearby vegetation, as the tree produces juglone in its roots, husks, and leaves, which can create a zone of inhibited growth for many surrounding plants.
Protecting your tree from disease is a significant challenge, as butternut canker and bunch disease are prevalent. Bunch disease often manifests as a "witches' broom" effect, where auxiliary buds fail to go dormant in the fall, leaving yellowed branches vulnerable to being killed by the first frost. Because the fungal vectors for canker are wide-ranging, you cannot easily isolate a single tree from infection. You may also need to manage local bird populations, as common grackles are known to destroy immature fruit.
If you are growing the tree for its nuts, remember that the fruit husks contain concentrated amounts of juglone. For those interested in preserving the harvest, the nuts can be processed through fermenting or pickling.
