Growing

When selecting a cherry tree for your orchard or container garden, remember that most sweet cherry varieties require a second, different plant nearby to ensure successful pollination. Because these are perennial trees, you should plant them in their permanent location rather than attempting to transplant them later. They thrive in well-drained soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5, and while they can grow quite large in the ground, they also perform well in containers.

As your tree matures, you may notice its reddish-brown wood, which is highly prized for fine woodworking and even for smoking meats to add a pleasant flavor. While the ripe fruit is the goal, be aware that the leaves and seeds contain substances that are slightly toxic.

To enjoy the best flavor, harvest your cherries when they are fully ripe and ready to use, as they will not continue to ripen once they have been picked from the branch. After picking, keep the fruit unwashed to help maintain quality. For longer-lasting enjoyment, you can store your harvest in the fridge, freeze the fruit, or preserve it through canning or drying.
