Chokecherry

Prunus virginiana

Zones 2–7

Growing

Because of its vigorous growth and tendency to spread via underground rhizomes, chokecherry is an excellent choice for stabilizing streambanks or creating thick, protective windbreaks. If you are planting it to serve as a privacy screen or erosion control, be aware that the native species can sucker aggressively, which may interfere with your lawn. For a more controlled ornamental look in a yard, look for specific cultivated varieties that have been bred to lack this suckering habit. When establishing new trees, ensure they are placed in well-draining soil, as they do not tolerate heavy clay or waterlogged conditions.

While this tree is remarkably hardy and can thrive in everything from sandy loam to nutrient-rich grasslands, you should provide regular irrigation if your area receives low annual rainfall. Keep an eye out for tent caterpillars, which can create unsightly nests on branches, or fungal issues like black knot and shothole. If you have livestock, avoid allowing them to graze on the tree during periods of drought or after a hard frost, as these stressors can cause the plant to accumulate toxic levels of hydrocyanic acid.

When the fruit is ready, harvest it immediately, as the berries will not continue to ripen once they are picked. To preserve the harvest, you can freeze the berries, dry them, or use them for canning. Always remember to handle the seeds and leaves with care, as they contain toxins.
