Growing

Growing clove as a perennial tree requires a tropical environment where you can provide constant moisture without letting the roots sit in waterlogged soil. Because this evergreen is highly sensitive to cold, you must protect it from even light frost, making it an ideal candidate for container gardening in warmer climates. When planting, aim for a slightly acidic soil environment, ideally between a pH of 5.5 and 7.0, to mimic its native Indonesian habitat.

If you are propagating from cuttings, ensure the new plant receives plenty of light, though it can tolerate partial shade. As the tree matures, you will notice crimson flowers appearing in clusters at the tips of the branches. The harvest is a precise task because the spice does not ripen once removed from the tree. You must wait until the flower buds transition from a pale or green hue to a vibrant, bright red.

When the buds reach approximately 1.5 to 2 centimeters in length, they are ready to be picked. To maintain their aromatic potency and prevent spoilage, harvest them carefully and store them unwashed in a dry, cool, or dark place. Keeping the buds dry is essential for preserving the essential oils that give cloves their signature scent and utility.
