Desert Agave
Agave deserti
Zones 8–13
Growing
Thriving in arid environments, this succulent forms a striking rosette of fleshy, gray-green leaves that radiate from a central base. When selecting a site, prioritize rocky or sandy locations that mimic its natural desert habitat. While this species is exceptionally drought-tolerant once established, you must ensure the planting area provides excellent drainage; avoid any spots where water tends to pool or become waterlogged, as stagnant moisture can lead to rot.
Because this is a long-lived perennial, you are planting for the long term. It is a slow-growing species that may take several decades to reach full maturity and produce its massive, yellow flowering stalk. If you are growing it for its dramatic architectural presence, keep in mind that the plant will eventually send up a tall inflorescence that can reach several meters in height.
While primarily grown for ornamental beauty, historically, the heart and young stalks of the plant were a significant food source. In a garden setting, you can simply enjoy its sculptural form and ability to withstand hard freezes. If you find yourself managing much larger specimens, remember that the leaf edges and tips are equipped with sharp spines, so use caution when pruning or moving the plant.
