Eastern Redbud
Cercis canadensis
Zones 4–9
Growing
As a native member of the pea family, the Eastern redbud is a hardy addition to your landscape that thrives in a wide range of soil conditions, provided the ground is not waterlogged. When you are starting from seed, you should plant them in a well-prepared seedbed with a very shallow depth of no more than 0.2 inches. Because this tree develops a deep, rapid taproot during its first few years, it is much easier to transplant young seedlings while they are still small and growing near parent trees rather than attempting to move a mature specimen.
Once established, this deciduous tree naturally takes on a vase-like shape as it matures. It is a magnificent specimen for attracting pollinators, specifically hummingbirds and honeybees, to your garden. If you are interested in the culinary uses of this tree, the flowers are edible and can be enjoyed either raw or fried. In certain regions, the green twigs are even used to season wild game. If you are collecting seeds for future planting, ensure they are kept dry.
