Eastern Sandcherry
Prunus pumila
Zones 2–9
Growing
When selecting your Eastern Sandcherry, look for bare-root nursery stock, which is the easiest to plant. Set plants in the ground during the early spring while they are still dormant, though containerized specimens can be moved to their permanent home in early summer. This shrub grows in sandy, well-drained soils, much like the shorelines and dunes where it naturally occurs. It is drought tolerant once its root system is established, and it can also handle brief periods of flooding, making it a sturdy choice for stabilizing banks near streams.
Because this plant has a prostrate, spreading growth habit, competition easily overwhelms it. Avoid planting it in areas dominated by aggressive species like Japanese fleeceflower or reed canary grass, as these taller plants will shade it out. Instead, use it in open, sunny spots where its dense, low-growing form can spread. As the stems touch the ground, they develop new roots, forming a stable, mat-like network. This makes it effective for erosion control in sandy landscapes.
