Fava Bean
Vicia faba
Zones 1–9
Growing
Direct-drill your seeds into the soil rather than broadcasting them, as this gives a more even and reliable stand. When planting in the spring, make sure the soil has adequate moisture to help the seeds establish. If you are growing larger-seeded cultivars, you may need heavier planting tools, similar to what you would use for lima beans. Because these plants have a strong, upright growth habit, they can serve as a natural scaffold for other climbing plants in a mixed garden.
To manage disease, especially in humid environments, try orienting your rows west to east. This allows better airflow and sun exposure, which helps the foliage dry more quickly and reduces the risk of fungal issues. Fava beans are hardy, but they can be susceptible to various nematodes and bacterial diseases that are often carried via the seed itself, so use clean, high-quality seed.
When it is time to harvest, pick the pods when they are ready for use, as the beans do not continue to ripen once removed from the plant. For long-term use, you can blanch the beans before freezing them. If you are storing them in the fridge, keep them unwashed to help them last longer.
