Growing

Establishing a grapevine requires careful attention to the winter dormancy period, as the temperatures experienced during this rest phase directly influence how well the plant buds in the following spring. When planting your nursery stock or cuttings, ensure the soil remains well-drained and maintains a pH between 5.5 and 7.5. Because these vines are vigorous climbers, you must provide a sturdy permanent structure, such as a trellis or arbor, to support their heavy weight as they trail or climb.

To ensure a high-quality harvest, focus on the microclimate around your vines. Significant temperature fluctuations can impact the development of essential sugars, acids, and the aromatic compounds that define the fruit's flavor. While you can prune the vines to manage growth, remember that the leaves and young stems can even be used as forage for small livestock after the pruning is complete.

When the berries reach full maturity, harvest them immediately, as they will not continue to ripen once removed from the vine. To keep your harvest fresh, store the fruit unwashed in a cool, dark cellar or the refrigerator. If you have an abundance, you can also use the fruit to create dried raisins or fermented wines.
