Honey Mesquite
Prosopis glandulosa
Zones 7–13
Growing
Growing honey mesquite from seed requires preparation to overcome the tough seed coat. Before planting, scarify the seeds by chipping or cutting the outer layer, or by briefly exposing them to boiling water. This helps moisture penetrate the seed, which matters because germination occurs quickly, often within six hours of the seeds being wetted. Plant when soil temperatures are warm, ideally between 20 and 40 °C.
Once established, these trees are hardy and grow in full sun, provided the soil is well-drained and not waterlogged. They are drought-tolerant, but growth is strongest where the roots can reach deeper groundwater. If you are harvesting pods, wait until you can hear the seeds rattling inside the pod, then store them in a dry place to maintain viability. In some southern regions, watch for stem fungal diseases, which can occasionally affect the tree.
