Growing

Hops are vigorous, climbing perennials, so the first task is providing a sturdy structure. Whether you plant nursery stock or divide rhizomes in early spring, make sure your trellis or twine can support the heavy weight of the bines as they ascend during the warm season. Plants grow in well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH between 6.0 and 7.0. In containers, keep the drainage holes clear to prevent waterlogged roots, which can lead to rot.

As the season progresses, watch the development of the female cone-shaped flowers. They are ready to harvest when they appear ripe and fragrant, and you should pick them immediately because they do not continue to ripen once removed from the vine. To maintain the quality of the essential oils, harvest the cones and store them unwashed in a cool, dark cellar or the refrigerator. For longer storage, dry them. Avoid any moisture during storage.
