Growing

Establishing a jujube tree is a long-term investment in your landscape, as these hardy perennials can thrive in a wide variety of climates ranging from temperate to tropical. When planting, ensure your site provides excellent drainage, as the tree does not tolerate waterlogged soil. While they are remarkably drought-tolerant once established, they perform best in full sun. If you are working with limited space, these trees are versatile enough to be grown successfully in containers.

Because the fruit does not continue to ripen once it is removed from the branch, timing your harvest is critical. You must pick the fruit when it has reached its full, ready-to-eat state directly from the tree. Once harvested, you can enjoy them fresh, but they are also excellent candidates for drying, which can extend their use. If you prefer a different texture, you can also preserve them through canning or even fermenting to create unique syrups or wines.

While North American plantings are currently largely free from significant issues, keep a watchful eye on the health of your tree's canopy. In some regions, diseases like witch's broom can affect growth, and certain moth larvae are known to feed on the developing fruit. Maintaining a clean orchard environment and monitoring for any unusual clustering of twigs can help you manage the tree's long-term vitality.
