Growing

Success with lingonberries depends on managing moisture and soil acidity. These low-growing mats are sensitive to waterlogged conditions, so choose well-drained sites. If your garden soil stays damp, plant in raised beds at least 12 inches above the surrounding ground to prevent root rot. Maintain an acidic soil with a pH between 4.5 and 5.5.

A clean garden is the best defense against fungal issues. After harvest, clear away any fallen debris or old fruit from beneath the mats to prevent pathogens from overwintering in the soil. If fungal fruiting bodies or spore cups appear on the ground, use a leaf rake to disturb the mulch and break them up, and control weeds, as dense weeds can harbor these spores.

Pick berries when fully ripe, as they will not continue to sweeten once removed from the plant. Store them unwashed in the fridge or freeze them for later use. For long-term preservation, dry them or process them into jams and preserves.
