Marjoram
Origanum majorana
Zones 7–13
Growing
Marjoram is an aromatic herb with sweet, citrusy notes. It grows in well-drained soil, so do not let the soil become waterlogged, as the roots prefer a drier setting. You can start your plants from seed or by taking cuttings, and they do well in containers. If you are planting in the ground, aim for a soil pH between 6.0 and 8.0.
As a compact bush, marjoram is easy to manage. Harvest the leaves when the flavor is strongest, as the plant does not improve in taste after being picked. Use the leaves immediately or store them unwashed in the fridge to keep their essential oils. If you have a large harvest, drying the herb preserves its scent for use in soups, stews, or dressings later in the year.
This perennial can withstand light frost, but it is a warm-season crop that benefits from plenty of sunlight. If your plants become too large, propagate them through division to expand your herb garden. The flowers attract beneficial insects, so marjoram suits a pollinator garden.
