Mayhaw
Crataegus aestivalis
Zones 7–13
Growing
Because this species is an obligate wetland plant, you can lean into its natural affinity for damp environments. While it thrives in full sun, it is quite adaptable to partial shade and is particularly excellent for stabilizing stream banks or managing low-lying, soggy areas of your landscape. If you are planting in a container, ensure the medium stays consistently moist, as the tree prefers much higher moisture levels than most fruit-bearing species.
When your tree is established, focus your maintenance on annual pruning. Removing weak branches and sucker stems helps open up the canopy, which improves airflow and can significantly boost your fruit production. While generally hardy, keep an eye out for common pome fruit issues like fire blight, fruit rot, or pests such as the hawthorn lace bug and leafminers.
The red, fleshy fruit is ready to harvest in the spring. Because these berries do not continue to ripen once they are removed from the branch, you must pick them when they are fully ripe to ensure the best flavor for preserves. Once harvested, you can use the fruit to make traditional jellies or simply dry the berries for later use. If you aren't using them immediately, keep the fruit unwashed to help it last longer.
