Maypop
Passiflora incarnata
Zones 7–13
Growing
Because of its vigorous climbing habit, provide a sturdy trellis or fence for the vines to scale. If you are planting in a garden bed, be mindful of the plant's tendency to spread; regularly removing suckers helps keep the vine from encroaching on nearby areas. The plant is hardy and can survive light frost, but it grows best in full sun and prefers slightly acidic soil, ideally between pH 5.5 and 7.5.
If you start from seed, keep in mind that the seeds are sensitive to temperature and prefer darkness to germinate. Use warm soil during germination. If you prefer cuttings, a healthy 4- to 8-inch piece with thick roots sprouts more reliably.
Watch the foliage during the warm season, as Japanese beetles can congregate on the leaves and flowers to feed, potentially causing damage. When the fruit is ready, harvest it directly from the vine, as it will not continue to ripen once picked. Store unwashed fruit in a cool, dark place like a cellar or in the refrigerator.
