Mentha spicata
Zones 4–10
Growing
Because of its aggressive, creeping nature, plant spearmint in a container or a sunken pot to keep it from overtaking your garden. This perennial herb grows in soil that stays evenly moist, with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. It is hardy and can survive a hard freeze, but it does best when the soil is kept well-hydrated.
Watch the foliage for signs of fungal issues. Rust can appear as small pustules on the leaves, which may eventually cause them to drop, while leaf spot shows as dark, circular marks on the upper surface of the leaf. If you notice these symptoms, manage moisture and airflow. Pick the leaves when they are ready for use, as the plant does not continue to ripen once harvested.
For long-term use, dry the leaves or freeze them to preserve the aroma. If you are harvesting for tea or cocktails, store the leaves unwashed to prevent mold during storage.
