Muscadine Grape
Vitis rotundifolia
Zones 7–10
Growing
Establishing a muscadine vineyard begins with selecting the right site, ideally a fertile sandy loam or alluvial soil that stays well-drained. While these vines are remarkably hardy and resistant to devastating pests like Phylloxera and Pierce's disease, they do not tolerate waterlogged ground or extended periods of drought. If you are planting new vines, ensure the soil is slightly acidic, ideally between a pH of 5.0 and 6.5, to promote healthy root development.
When choosing your cultivars, check if your selected varieties are pistillate, which means they require a separate pollenizer plant to set fruit. However, if you plant "perfect-flowered" varieties like 'Carlos' or 'Noble', they can provide the necessary pollen for other plants. Because these vines are vigorous climbers, you must provide a sturdy trellis or support system to manage their heavy growth habit.
You will know your harvest is ready when the berries transition to their characteristic bronze, dark purple, or black hues. Unlike many other fruits, muscadines do not continue to ripen once they are removed from the vine, so you must pick them when they have reached full maturity on the plant. To maintain quality, store your unwashed fruit in a cool, dark cellar or the refrigerator. For long-term use, these grapes are excellent for drying, freezing, or fermenting into wine.
