Oat
Avena sativa
Zones 1–8
Growing
Because oats are a vigorous, cool-season crop, they can often outcompete many common weeds by growing in thick, leafy shoots. To ensure a clean harvest, focus on using seed that is free of weed contaminants. While generally hardy and resistant to many issues, keep an eye on the foliage for signs of stem rust or crown rust. These fungal diseases can hinder the plant's ability to photosynthesize, so monitoring the health of the leaves is essential during the growing season.
When the grain is ready, you must harvest it at the correct moisture level. For safe, long-term storage, the moisture content should not exceed 13%. Once harvested, keep the grains unwashed to prevent spoilage. You can store your dried oats in a cool, dark cellar or at room temperature. Beyond the grain itself, the leftover straw is highly absorbent and serves as excellent bedding for small animals or can even be used for decorative crafts.
