Growing

Growing a citrus tree requires a commitment to warmth, as even a light frost can be fatal to the tree. When planting, ensure your soil remains well-drained and maintains a pH between 6.0 and 7.5 to prevent root issues. If you are growing in a container, you can easily manage moisture levels, but avoid letting the roots sit in waterlogged soil. While the tree is a single-plant producer that does not require a second tree for pollination, the fragrant blossoms are a major draw for bees. If you keep hives nearby, you may even harvest a uniquely citrus-scented honey.

Keep a close watch for citrus greening disease, a bacterial threat that can devastate your grove. Beyond the fruit, the tree offers several aromatic rewards. The blossoms are incredibly fragrant and can be used to create orange blossom water for Middle Eastern or French desserts, or even dried for tea. If you find fallen blossoms, you can also use them to infuse tea. Even the leaves are versatile enough to be boiled for a delicate infusion.

Because oranges do not continue to ripen once they are removed from the branch, you must wait until they are fully mature on the tree before harvesting. Once picked, keep your fruit unwashed to help it last longer. For the best flavor and texture, store your harvested oranges at room temperature.
