Growing

Sow your seeds once the soil has warmed and the danger of frost has passed. Because peanuts are legumes that fix nitrogen through root nodules, they work well in crop rotation; planting them in a sequence with crops like corn can boost your future yields. Aim for a light, sandy loam soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.5. These plants are hardy, but they are sensitive to extreme heat and drought, especially during flowering and early pod development.

Water regularly, ideally providing about 20 inches of moisture through the season to prevent stress. Watch the plants for pests like aphids, mites, or pod borers, which can damage your crop. Avoid severe drought during pod formation, as moisture stress can lead to mold contamination.

Harvest promptly, because the pods do not ripen further once picked. The plant continues to flower while pods are developing, so some pods may still be immature when others are ready. To prevent the growth of harmful molds, store harvested peanuts unwashed in a cool, dark place.
