Growing

When planting your persimmon tree, ensure the soil remains well-drained and not waterlogged, aiming for a slightly acidic pH between 5.5 and 6.5. While these trees can be started indoors and transplanted, they are also easily grown from cuttings or grafts. If you are planting in a container, ensure it has excellent drainage to prevent root issues. Because a single plant is capable of setting fruit on its own, you do not need to worry about cross-pollination between different trees.

As the season progresses into autumn, you may notice the tree losing its leaves around the time of harvest. To determine when the fruit is ready, look for a significant breakdown in tannins, which reduces the characteristic astringency and increases sweetness. While you can eat the skin once the fruit has fully ripened, many prefer to remove it. For a traditional method of preservation, you can tie pairs of fruit to a string and hang them from a pole to dry.

When you harvest, you can store your fruit unwashed to maintain quality. For short-term use, keep them at room temperature, but for longer storage, a cool dark cellar or the fridge works well. If you have a surplus, you can also freeze or dry the fruit for later enjoyment.
