Growing

As a woody shrub, the pomegranate offers more than fruit; mature specimens can develop a sculptural form with multiple trunks and twisted bark that works as an ornamental feature in the landscape. Plant in well-draining soil, as pomegranate roots are susceptible to decay in waterlogged conditions. The plants are drought-tolerant once established and grow best in a soil pH between 5.5 and 7.5.

In a wet climate, watch the base of the plant to prevent fungal issues. Certain butterfly larvae can also affect the fruit. Because the fruit does not continue to ripen once removed from the tree, harvest it when it is fully ready to use.

Once harvested, you can keep the fruit at room temperature, but avoid washing the skins until you are ready to eat them, to help prevent spoilage. The juicy arils are used fresh to garnish salads, or pressed into juices and syrups for dressings and marinades.
