Growing

Because these vines spread low across the ground, prepare a large area of well-draining soil with a pH between 6.0 and 7.5. Since this is a warm-season crop, wait until the soil has warmed and the danger of frost has passed before sowing. For a heavy fruit set, plant at least two plants near each other; this variety relies on pollinators to move pollen between male and female flowers, and a second plant nearby improves fruit set.

As the season progresses, keep the soil consistently moist but avoid waterlogged conditions, which can lead to rot. Larger varieties like the Hubbard have massive, heavy vines that may need management to keep them out of garden paths. Pumpkins are ready to harvest when the skin is firm and the color has fully developed, such as the deep orange of a Golden Hubbard or the bluish-gray of a Blue Hubbard.

Unlike some other gourds, these pumpkins will not ripen further once removed from the vine, so pick them when fully mature. For off-season keeping, store the harvest unwashed in a cool, dark cellar to prevent moisture buildup and decay. For later cooking, you can also blanch the flesh before freezing it.
