Growing

Growing rice requires constant moisture, as this warm-season annual grows in wet soil and can even be grown submerged. When preparing your garden or containers, aim for a slightly acidic to neutral soil pH. Start seeds indoors and transplant once the weather is warm and the danger of frost has passed. Each plant sets its own fruit, so you do not need complex pollination techniques.

Watch your crop for signs of rice blast fungus, a common disease that can reduce yield. Some modern varieties have built-in resistance, but monitor the health of the upright stems. When the grains are ready, harvest them immediately, as rice does not continue to ripen once picked. Pick the grain when it is ready to use.

Store the grains unwashed. You can keep your supply in a cool, dark cellar or at room temperature.
