Rose Hip
Rosa rugosa
Zones 2–8
Growing
This rugged shrub suits coastal gardens or areas prone to salt spray and heavy storms. It is adapted to sandy, light-textured soils and grows where other plants struggle, provided the site does not remain waterlogged. Because it resists common issues like rose black spot and rose rust, it is a low-maintenance option for those who want blooms without constant chemical treatment.
To harvest the fruit, look for hips that have reached full maturity. Unlike many other fruits, these do not continue to ripen once removed from the plant, so pick them when they are ready to use. Once gathered, wash them before use. You can store the hips in a cool, dark cellar, in the fridge, or dry them for later use in teas and syrups.
This woody perennial can be grown in containers or planted directly into the ground. It suits roadsides and seaside edges because of its toughness. If planting from nursery stock or divisions, keep the soil pH between 5.5 and 7.5.
