Sassafras
Sassafras albidum
Zones 4–9
Growing
Establish sassafras from nursery stock or saplings once the spring frost has passed and the soil has settled. Because this species is adaptable, it grows in everything from deep shade to full sun, suiting woodland edges or use as a structural element in larger gardens. The mature tree has three leaf shapes, oval, mitten-shaped, and two-lobed, which give the tree a textured appearance.
Sassafras is a hardy native that grows into a large, spreading tree, so leave room for its eventual canopy. For ornamental interest, note the seasonal changes; the foliage often turns showy in autumn. Since this is a long-lived perennial tree, it needs little intervention once its root system is established, though well-draining soil will help it grow alongside other native species.
