Small Camas
Camassia quamash
Zones 4–8
Growing
When planting camas bulbs, replicate the moist, riparian environments where they grow naturally. These perennials prefer soil that stays damp throughout the growing season, and suit garden areas that tolerate wet feet or sit near water edges. They handle various light levels, from the dappled shade under deciduous forest canopies to open, sunny spots.
When propagating from bulbs, plant them at an appropriate depth to mimic their natural habitat. If you store bulbs for the next season, keep them in a cool, dark cellar. Because these plants are often found in damp settings, do not let the soil dry out completely during the spring and summer months.
A critical note for anyone growing or foraging these bulbs: never mistake them for Death Camas (Zigadenus venenosus), which is toxic. Verify your identification carefully, as the two species can look similar to the untrained eye. If you are cultivating them for their historical use as a food source, make sure your planting site is free from contaminants.
