Smooth Sumac
Rhus glabra
Zones 3–9
Growing
This hardy shrub thrives in rugged environments, making it an excellent choice for dry, rocky hillsides or areas with poor, well-drained soil. While it is remarkably adaptable and can even tolerate slightly saline conditions, you should be mindful of its vigorous growth habit. Because it spreads via underground rhizomes and produces root suckers, it has the potential to form dense thickets that may displace other garden plants. If you are planting it in a confined space, consider managing its spread to prevent it from becoming weedy in your landscape.
If you choose to propagate from seed, success depends on providing continuous light and a cycle of alternating warm and cool temperatures to trigger germination. For established plants, you can also use root cuttings. When the shrub is established, it is incredibly resilient and can survive hard freezes and even withstand the heat of a fire, as its rhizomes remain protected just below the soil surface.
When looking for the characteristic fruit, you will notice the stems and branches are notably hairless and coated in a distinctive whitish, waxy substance. The leaves are large and pinnately compound, featuring many sharply serrated leaflets that are dark green on top and pale underneath. This plant is most at home in full sun or partial shade, mimicking the open woodlands and prairies where it naturally occurs.
