Growing

To increase yield, mix a specific strain of rhizobia bacteria inoculum with your seeds before sowing. This bacteria helps the plant fix nitrogen in the soil, which is important for the health of this legume. Aim for a slightly acidic to neutral soil, ideally between pH 6.0 and 7.0, with good drainage to prevent waterlogged roots.

Watch your plants during the warm growing season, as they are susceptible to several pests. Japanese beetles can be voracious, while corn earworms and bollworms may damage the developing pods. If deer or groundhogs visit your garden, you might see damage from feeding or trampling; repellents can help protect your crop. Also watch for signs of bacterial blight or downy mildew, which can affect the foliage.

Once the pods are ready, harvest them immediately, as the beans will not continue to ripen once picked. For long-term use, you can freeze the beans, though blanching them first is recommended to preserve quality. You can also dry the beans for use in soups or savory dishes. Store harvested beans unwashed to help prevent spoilage.
