Thimbleberry
Rubus parviflorus
Zones 2–8
Growing
Thimbleberry is a thornless shrub suited to a wild landscape, especially a habitat for native pollinators like bumblebees and honeybees. Because these plants need even, constant moisture, they suit shady or partially shaded spots where the soil remains damp. New plants establish best from dormant rhizome segments, though you can also propagate using stem cuttings or seeds. In containers, keep the medium consistently moist to mimic their natural woodland environment.
Watch for galls on the stems, leaves, or petioles, which are caused by specific wasps, midges, or aphids. Deer may browse the young stems and foliage. When the fragrant, red aggregate fruit is ready, harvest it immediately for use, as the berries will not continue to ripen once off the vine. Store the berries unwashed in the refrigerator, or freeze or can them.
