Thornless Blackberry
Rubus fruticosus
Zones 5–9
Growing
Because these thornless varieties lack the protective prickles of traditional blackberries, they are much gentler to handle during harvest, but they still require careful structural management. To keep your shrubs from sprawling uncontrollably, use annual pruning and training techniques. Tying down upright limbs or using a trellis can help maintain a manageable size, improve lateral branching, and increase your overall fruit productivity.
Maintaining plant health depends heavily on moisture management and sanitation. Since root rot is a common threat when soil becomes waterlogged, consider planting in raised beds at least 12 inches high to ensure excellent drainage. To prevent fungal issues, practice strict sanitation by removing any mummified or over-ripe fruit that falls to the ground, as these can harbor pathogens that overwinter in the garden.
When the berries are ready, pick them as they mature to prevent them from softening too much on the vine. Because these berries do not continue to ripen once they are off the plant, you must harvest them when they have reached their full, intended color. Once gathered, keep the fruit unwashed to help it last longer. For long-term use, you can freeze the berries or use them in canning.
