Turmeric
Curcuma longa
Zones 9–13
Growing
To thrive, turmeric requires a warm, tropical environment and prefers soil that is slightly acidic, ideally between a pH of 5.5 and 6.5. Since this is a perennial grown from rhizomes or divisions, you can start your plants indoors once the danger of frost has passed and then transplant them into the garden or a large container. Because the plant is highly sensitive to cold, ensure the soil has warmed significantly before moving them outside, as even a light frost will kill the foliage.
As the plant develops its single upright stems, provide plenty of moisture through regular watering, but be careful to ensure the soil remains well-drained and never waterlogged. While the plant can tolerate partial shade, it performs exceptionally well in full sun. If you are growing in containers, ensure they have adequate drainage holes to prevent rhizome rot.
You will know it is time to harvest when the rhizomes are mature and ready for use, as the plant does not ripen further once picked. For the best quality, harvest the rhizomes and store them unwashed in a cool, dark cellar or even in the refrigerator. If you prefer a longer-lasting option, you can also dry the rhizomes to create your own turmeric powder.
