Growing

Because of their deep taproots, black walnuts are not usually transplanted; sow seeds directly or plant established stock where you want the tree to grow. When starting from seed, you might use nursery conditions, but protect young seedlings from rodents. Some cultivars have been released to prioritize wood quality for timber, while others are selected for nut production. If you are planting in a group, a mix of varieties that produce pistillate flowers can support wind pollination.

Watch the foliage during the warmer months, as caterpillars and fall webworms can consume leaves heavily from midsummer through autumn. Aphids or lace bugs may suck juices from the leaves, often leaving a sticky substance known as honeydew. The tree is hardy, but controlling weeds around young trees is critical for establishment and a strong growth rate.

Harvest the nuts for immediate use once they are ready, as they do not ripen after being picked. After harvest, cure the nuts for over two weeks. Store the unwashed nuts in a cool, dark cellar, in the fridge, or in the freezer.
