Growing

A walnut tree is a long-term investment. These trees grow slowly and take many years to reach maturity and begin fruiting. Select a site with deep, rich soil and plenty of sunlight. Because the tree can develop a massive trunk and a wide canopy, leave ample space for its eventual size.

As the tree matures, watch for the walnut husk fly. This pest lays its eggs directly into the fruit husks, which can damage your harvest. Some cultivars are more susceptible than others depending on how thick or soft their husks are. Fallen leaves and husks also contain juglone, a natural chemical that can inhibit the growth of many surrounding plants.

Harvest the nuts when they are fully developed. Unlike many other crops, these walnuts do not continue to ripen once picked from the tree. For long-term use, store unwashed nuts in a cool, dark cellar to maintain their quality.
