Growing

Watermelons need heat, so wait until the soil has warmed and the danger of frost has passed before sowing. You can sow seeds directly in the garden, or start them in pots under cover and transplant them. Since these vines trail or climb with long stems, allow plenty of space or support. In containers, choose smaller "icebox" varieties.

Your plants need a second plant nearby for pollination. Watch the leaves for powdery mildew or mosaic virus, which can appear in humid conditions, and for pests like aphids, fruit flies, or root-knot nematodes. For easier maintenance, choose modern cultivars bred to resist diseases like anthracnose or fusarium wilt.

Pick the fruit as soon as it reaches maturity, as watermelons do not continue to ripen after harvest. Store unwashed melons at room temperature.
