Growing

Because yams are vigorous climbers, provide a sturdy trellis or support structure to manage their growth. In containers, you can train the vines to follow a vertical frame. To prevent root rot, use a planting site or container with good drainage; if your garden soil stays heavy or waterlogged, raised beds can keep the root zone aerated and protected from excess moisture.

Monitor the crop often to catch issues early. Watch the vines for wilting or abnormal growth, which could indicate insect feeding or disease. Good sanitation around the base of the plant is also important. After harvest, clear away decaying plant debris to prevent pathogens from overwintering in the soil.

Harvest the tubers promptly when they are ready, as they do not continue to ripen once picked. Avoid washing the tubers before storage. Store the unwashed tubers in a cool, dark cellar.
