Tatsoi

Brassica rapa subsp. narinosa

Zones 3–10

Growing

Tatsoi is a remarkably adaptable leafy green that thrives in the cool season, even surviving a hard freeze. Because it grows in a dense, leafy rosette from a central base, it is an excellent candidate for container gardening. When preparing your garden, you can sow the seeds directly into the soil where you intend them to grow, as they do not typically require transplanting. While they prefer full sun, they can also succeed in partial shade.

To ensure a healthy crop, aim for well-drained soil that stays moist. While this plant is hardy enough to handle heavy clay, it does not tolerate waterlogged conditions. If you are growing in a garden bed, ensure the area has good air circulation to help leaves dry, which supports overall plant health.

Since tatsoi does not ripen after you pick it, harvest the leaves when they are ready to use for your preferred recipe. For long-term use, you can blanch the leaves before freezing them. If you plan to store your harvest in the fridge, keep the leaves unwashed to help them maintain their quality.
